FUTURE VISION

A Two-Phase Path Toward Recovery
Work to date supports a two-phase vision for addressing high-energy shoreline erosion.
Phase One — Stabilize the Upper Intertidal Zone
Where suitable structures are available, repurpose existing concrete elements to reduce erosional pressure and stabilize actively eroding upper-intertidal areas. Continue monitoring and refine configurations based on measured response.
Phase Two — Extend Seaward and Rebuild Elevation
The longer-term concept is to reduce continued lowering farther seaward, rebuild intertidal elevation, and ultimately create conditions that can support a wider marsh fringe in front of the seawall.
One concept under consideration is the use of floating systems that remain effective as water levels rise during spring tides and storms. Because floating systems are not fixed on the bottom, they may reduce wave energy without creating the same direct barrier to sediment transport.
Possible complementary uses for future floating systems have been identified, including vegetated surfaces for water-quality improvement, small-scale renewable energy, aquaculture applications, and Bio-Rock enhancement. These are future concepts to be tested.
